Haryana: JD(U) chief to campaign with former prime minister Deve Gowda
Former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar will campaign for the Om Prakash Chautala-led Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana, along with former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. The assembly elections in Haryana will take place on October 15. The senior Janata Dal (United) leader will address 10 election rallies across Haryana on October 11 and 12, according to party spokesperson KC Tyagi. In January last year, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautala was sentenced to 10 years in jail for recruiting 3,206 teachers through corrupt means.
Maharashtra: Sharad Pawar denies any role in BJP-Shiv Sena split
Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar on Friday refuted allegations that he had engineered a split between the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shiv Sena. These allegations were put forth by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, who claimed that as soon as the BJP and Shiv Sena had split, the NCP broke their alliance with Congress. "We announced our decision to break the alliance with the Congress the same day because there was not much time left," said Pawar. "With only 24 hours to go for the nomination filing deadline, we had to announce our decision so that we could file nominations for all assembly constituencies."
Jammu and Kashmir: Girl killed by firing from Pakistani militants across LoC
A 16-year-old girl was killed, along with five others after militants from Pakistan fired gun shots across the Line of Control into Poonch district on Friday. Indian troops responded to the attack by using similar weapons. In a separate incident, Indian armed forces killed a Hizbul Mujahideen militant after an encounter in Jammu & Kashmir's Pulwama district.
Tamil Nadu: Protests over Jayalalithaa's arrest continue
Protests continued across the state on Friday against the Bangalore special court's judgement that convicted former chief minister Jayalalithaa of acquiring financial assets through corrupt means. Shops in Kancheepuram, Erode, Dharmapuri and Villupuram districts, among others, were shut on Friday, as party workers from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam called for a total bandh in the union territory of Puducherry on Saturday. A report in Mail Today has stated that the Karnataka government wants to transfer Jayalalithaa from the Bangalore Central Jail to a prison in Tamil Nadu because of law and order concerns.

Union ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad and Ram Vilas Paswan will visit Patna on Saturday to take stock of the stampede that occurred on Friday evening. Thirty three people were killed and 26 injured in a stampede after Dussehra celebrations at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. Both ministers on Friday blamed the Bihar government under Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi for its inability prevent such a tragedy.
